I had a conference call this morning with 17 other callers on a project that I’m mostly finished with. Most of the work now involves supply chain (I’m R&D), so for the last few calls I haven’t even muttered a word. I called in on my cell phone so that I could use my BT headset and continue other work.
Partway through the meeting, nature called and I decided to go ahead and go to the bathroom as: 1) I can mute my cell phone, and 2) I was unlikely to be called upon. I placed my phone on mute, walked to the bathroom, sat down at the toilet and let loose. I was thinking, “wow, good thing I’m on mute”, when, much to my horror, the call went completely quiet. I looked at my phone, and it had somehow unmuted itself. I nearly panicked and hung up, but remembered just in time that if I did I would be identified, so I placed the call back on mute instead. I hurried up, trying to finish before anything else happened, and got asked a question just as I was leaving. Thinking that I had got away with it, I umuted the phone and answered, and as I did, my voice echoed loudly off of the bathroom walls. Uh oh. For a second, the project manager didn’t say anything, but then replied, “Well, I guess we know who our multi-tasker is”. I’ve been called about it 7 times already. Man I’m an idiot.
