... the theory being that by the time you get to 1,000,000, post #1 is many years old -- long gone from the forum index or your browser's history -- and the number can be reused.

But if the forum is reset, then (depending on what the initial post number is set to) the system may re-use post numbers more quickly. If a post number is re-used before your browser ages out the history of you having visited it, you can see posts that are incorrectly marked read.

I've had to reset the forum a couple of times as our Amazon server ran out of disk space. The first time I just cleaned up some log files, but that did not last for very long. The second time, I expanded our server's disk space from 8gb to 100gb, which should prevent us from running out ever again.
