So bizarre that it even happens... the moon just happens to be the perfect size to create that effect. It didn't need to be. It's fun to wonder how ancient people would have tried to contextualize what was happening before they could predict these. Imagine you're going about your day, working in the field or whatever. It's a sunny day just like any other day. It starts getting cool and dark but there's no clouds out. Then all the sudden it's night time, and you look up and see that white ring. What are you supposed to think is happening?
