Freeman’s situation was completely different. Notre Dame was near the end of a successful season, their coach left and

ND had an outside chance at the playoffs.

I agree that the ‘hire the interim guy’ is often a bad strategy. But in this instance it seemed even riskier since this was a lousy team. I was puzzled that people were so quick to anoint JD as a great coach and obvious successor simply because he was much better than Holt who was performing poorly for the last two seasons.

That said, I hope he’s great.
