The early guidance they are receiving is that any positive test will be a mandatory 14 day quarantine for that player as well as any player who has had direct contact with the positive test subject.
Coaches are telling administrators that this will result in cancelled games throughout the season. There is no way to avoid positive tests & they are concerned about the player safety issue if an entire offensive line has to be simultaneously quarantined, for instance.
They were hoping that there would be policy built in to only quarantine the positive tests but the schools are telling them that will not be the case. The contact tracing & subsequent quarantines for “exposed” athletes will be mandatory. The liability of putting potentially exposed players on the field with opposing teams is considered too significant.
This sounds like a logistical nightmare. Could you imagine being ranked #1 in the country, getting a positive test on your star QB & his OL? Now what? Forfeit? Play with backups? How will the committee handle a loss when the best players were out?
