This more or less obliterates the value of conference titles, at least for NC contenders. I mean 4 SEC teams

getting into the field of 12 is probably right in terms of team quality, but if a team finishes #4 in a conference and then wins the national title, that conference championship is borderline pointless.

Much like basketball, which nobody cares about until betting time (sorry, Jeff).

: 1-4 of the champions get byes, 5-12 play 1st round on campus sites. Conceivably, Notre Dame could never get a bye without joining a league?

: Last year's field as an example (final CFP rank in parenthesis):

: 1(1) Alabama vs 8(5) Texas A&M/9(7) Florida
: 4(6) Oklahoma vs 5(8) Cincinnati/12(11) Indiana
: 2(2) Clemson vs 7(4) Notre Dame/10(9) Georgia
: 3(3) Ohio State vs 6(12) Coastal Carolina/11(10) Iowa State
