Has to be the short preparation. Pretty much everyone was playing with their clubs 8 days before the WC got underway.

No opportunity to get in weeks of training together and play friendlies. Just another reason from the soccer standpoint Qatar was a terrible choice if it needed to be hosted in the middle of the world's league seasons (except for MLS).
